About Winterfell

Welcome to "Winterfell", our mountain cabin hide-away!   Located just off a main road in Arnold, the inn has easy access to Highway 4, and from there up to Bear Valley, or down to Murphy's.  Each suite is one bedroom + bath package.  Our rate plan is simple ($90 per night including tax if you book with us directly), we do not charge cleaning fees, and for most nights we have only a one-night minimum stay.

Originally build in 1955 as a hunting cabin, the original structure here was just a one-room cabin.  In 2006, the owner built two additional bedrooms on the top floor, and a large bedroom on the bottom.

Cozy bedroom with a large bed, pillows, and a small bar area with stools.

Our Accommodations

Three guests are allowed per suite. Each suite has a king bed, one small folding cot, one full bathroom, and a private entrance.  While there is no “cooking” allowed in the rooms, we have set up a small bar area in each suite with some very basic kitchen functions - small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, etc.  A small outdoor-gas BBQ grill is available upon request.  You are welcome to use any supplies in the bar area.  We provide a complimentary array of snacks and beverages.  An internet TV is located in each suite with a selection of stations. Wifi is available throughout. There are no common areas in the main house. A washer and dryer are available for guests to use ($15 per load). ONE (1) well-behaved dog (PET, COMFORT, OR SERVICE) is allowed.  Dogs are NOT allowed to be left alone in the Unit unless in a kennel. Cats are not allowed for allergic reasons.

    More Information

ALWAYS CONFIRM WITH CALTRANS THAT THE MOUTAIN PASS (SUCH AS EBBETTS PASS ON HIGHWAY 4) YOU MAY BE TRAVELING THRU IS OPEN. SNOWFALL, ROCK SLIDES, TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, AND OTHER INCIDENTS MAY CAUSE THE PASS TO BE CLOSED.

We do “Guided Check-Ins,” so please give us an approximate time of arrival when you can.

Guest Limit – Each suite is limited to three or fewer guests, including children. Additional people will be charged $75 per person per night. Alternatively, we may opt to decline the reservation altogether if the number is excessive.

Beds - There is ONE king bed in each unit. We can bring in one roll-away fold-up cot, but it will not be comfortable for a large adult. Please let us know if you’ll need the cot.

Cell Phones - Only Verizon Cellular works up here. We have a house VOIP phone with an extension in your unit.

Parking – There’s a large orange ball on Moran Road at the bottom of the driveway next to a green utility box. Use those markers to help you see where to pull in. Then, pull up, turn left and park in front of, and to the left of the garage; in front of the 'Visitor Parking' sign.

Check-In/Out – Check-in is after 4 PM. If you’ll be arriving after 10 PM, a piece of paper may be placed on the parking sign with self-check in instructions.  Check-out is before 11 AM. SOMETIMES, an early check-in or late check-out is possible, but must be coordinated with us beforehand.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging – We have 110V (Level 1) and 220V (Level 2) outlets accessible to your parking space. We charge $1 per hour for Level 1 charging and $5 per hour for Level 2 charging. Please discuss with us beforehand if you want to charge your vehicle.

Ride Sharing – There are no ride shares (Uber or Lyft) up here.

Quiet Time – Between 10 PM and 6 AM. Please be mindful of other guests.

No Cooking in Room – Hot plates and skillets are not allowed to be used in the room. Each room contains a microwave, Keurig, and small fridge.  We do have a small gas BBQ grill you can use.

Man’s Best Friend - Please let us know if you will be bringing your dog with you. ONE well-behaved dog (PET, COMFORT, OR SERVICE) is allowed. Dogs are NOT allowed to be left alone in the Unit unless in a kennel. We have a kennel you can use, but you must supply your own dog bedding. Please be aware of wild animals while your dog is outside, especially of skunks. Cats are not allowed for allergic reasons.

Wild Animals Including Bears – Your space here is in a forested area with lots of wildlife. Please be respectful, observant, and safe. Roll your car windows up, lock it, and DO NOT leave food in it (bears can tear doors off cars)! Lock the door to your unit when sleeping (the bears are smart). And finally, please do not feed the wildlife.

    BOOK DIRECT AND SAVE MONEY

Advice on how to get the best prices for overnight stays.

BOOKING FEES - When you make a reservation through a travel booking site such as Expedia, Booking.com, VRBO, or Airbnb, you will pay a Booking Fee (aka Service Fee). Sometimes, these fees can be significant – between 18-30% depending upon agreements between innkeepers and the platforms. In some cases, both the traveler and the innkeepers pay fees. However, there are ways (especially lately) to avoid these fees and pay a lot less for your stays.

Two Ways to Avoid Booking Fees –

    1)  MetaSearch Engines – First, look at a MetaSearch Engine for the area and time you want to stay. Trivago and Tripadvisor are two examples of MetaSearch Engines, although Tripadvisor can also act as an OTA (Online Travel Agent). When you find something you like, do a Google Search for the place’s name and area that it is in. What you will often find is the inn’s private website (such as: “www.wintefell-inn.com”). Contact the inn directly and ask if they take direct bookings at a reduced price. Besides the price, ASK FOR TERMS! The most common “terms” in the business are for an inn to offer free cancelation for up to five days before arrival, and then for the reservation to be non-refundable. Be prepared to pay at the time of contact with a credit card, Venmo, Paypal, or some other means.

    2) Regional Cooperatives – Regions, both large (nationwide) and small (communities such as Arnold), have begun to band together and create websites where you can locate a place to stay, and then send you to that particular inn’s website. For the Arnold area, this website is: “www.stayinarnold.com”. In addition, the www.stayinarnold.com website is part of a larger non-profit website called: www.directbooknetwork.com. Another example of a Regional Cooperative network is: “www.houfy.com”. Once you have found a regional website, those sites will often operate in the same way as an OTA, except they send you straight to the inn’s website for a Direct Booking.

In Summary – Just as the internet has evolved over the past couple of decades, so has the process for locating a place to stay for the night. Several decades ago, OTA’s (Online Travel Agents) such as Expedia or AirBnB were huge disrupters to the reservation process, but have since become somewhat archaic today. Today, the way to book a room is via Metasearch Engines, Non-Profit Cooperative Regional Sites, and Direct Bookings.
